The International Alliance of Law Firms, an international network of select, business-oriented law firms including Vancouver-based Kornfeld Mackoff Silber LLP, has appointed Wendy Horn as its Executive Director.

Minneapolis-based Ms Horn brings to the Alliance 25 years of experience in professional services marketing and client standards monitoring and development.  She is the founder of LIFTOFF LAW llc, and has served as Executive Director and later President of a competitive law firm alliance which grew to 200 member firms in 60 countries under her directorship.

Ms Horn has also overseen several innovative programs, including

·  Research with in-house counsel to develop specific client service standards and a performance monitoring process to ensure member performance and protect brand equity.

  • Web-based satisfaction index rating of member firms, accessible by in-house counsel.
  • Qualifications database as a resource for in-house counsel.
  • Agreements with the general counsel of multinational corporations designating member firms as preferred outside counsel.

The common aim of the Alliance member firms is to combine positive legal advice with sound commercial judgment and litigation expertise when required. Each member of the Alliance is an individual law firm which is responsible only for the work which it carries out.

Alliance Member firms seek to provide their clients with a swift and effective response to the challenges of international business requirements.

Effective July 1, 2010, the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) will replace the GST and provincial sales tax (PST) in British Columbia.

Some products and services will see an increase in the amount of tax charged as a consequence of the HST, but the taxes on legal services will not increase. Legal services are already subject to both GST and PST and so costs will not increase with the implementation of the HST in B.C.  Legal fees for services rendered (lawyer time and disbursements on the clients behalf) prior to July 1, 2010 are being taxed at 12% (GST 5% + PST 7%), and similar charges after the July 1st transition date will be subject to 12% HST.

In order to avoid the complications that result from having pre and post HST time and disbursements recorded on files, our law firm has elected to bill matters with outstanding entries prior to July 1, 2010 to clear accounts up to the effective date.

For clients who are not billed prior to this transition date, their bill may show GST and PST for services rendered up to June 30, 2010, and HST for services rendered after July 1, 2010 but without duplication.
